Reed Richards is significant as being one of the preeminent superheroes in a world based almost entirely on the concept. As the leader and a founding member of the Fantastic Four, Reed has had a prominent role in most "events" of the universe and is both well-respected and well-known. The Fantastic Four are unique in that popular opinion tends to favor them more often than not; while the X-men and Avengers are at times (or always, in the case of the former) seen as a threat or liability, the Fantastic Four are usually known as respectable and well-liked.

Reed, in particular, has his hands in just about everything that goes on in this universe, if indirectly. He's a good friend of Avengers leaders Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, along with Charles Xavier of the X-men and countless alien races, including the Inhumans. Although he's a bit of a meddler, Reed is often called upon to be a mediator between different factions in the universe. As a scientist and explorer, he has also discovered or been to many different dimensions and realms, including the Negative Zone, which he keeps a portal to in his home.

Since the superhero Civil War, the Fantastic Four have largely returned to basics and focused on themselves rather than the larger superhero community. They've been caught up in interdimensional and intergalactic conflicts, worked on their own interpersonal relationships, and bolstered their ranks with a dozen gifted children from around the world. Reed's current place in the Marvel Universe is as one of its pillars, and he seeks to be even more of an interventionist through the Worst Idea Ever Illuminati.

Basically, he's one important dude, and chances are if something's happened in this world since he's been Mr. Fantastic, he knows about or has had a hand in it.
